Willowdale offers trail-use opportunities on 40 miles of trails and fishing and boating on 100 acre Hood Pond. There are no developed recreational facilities at the Forest which exists as two separate parcels divided by Route 1. The eastern block of the Forest abuts Bradley Palmer State Park and the Ipswich River.

The original land for both the Pine Swamp and Hood Pond sections of Willowdale State Forest was owned by Bradley Palmer. Additional parcels continue to be added to Willowdale State Forest as land and funds become available.

he eastern section of Willowdale State Forest consists of forested glacial hills and eskers with numerous wetlands.

The marshes are characterized by open water and such typical marsh plants as yellow pond lilies, pickerelweed, reeds, arrowheads, cattails, purple loosestrife, sedges, duckweed, sweetflag, Joe Pye weed and blue flag and yellow irises, and are a prime habitat for waterfowl.

  • Bicycling

    There are a few designated biking trails in the State Forest.

  • Fishing

    Fishing is permitted but please contact the park for information regarding fishing regulations and permits.

  • Hiking

    Willowdale offers trail-use opportunities on 40 miles of trails.

  • Horseback Riding

    There are a few horseback riding trails. Please be cautious of hikers and bikers.

  • Hunting

    Hunting is allowed, but has restrictions. In addition hunting is only permitted on the west side of Route 1. Seasons are established yearly by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife and a licenses is required. For more information, call 508-389-6300 or check out www.mass.gov/masswildlife.

  • Winter Sports

    Visitors enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.



Willowdale State Forest is located in northeastern Massachusetts.

From the South: Take I-95 to Exit 50 to Route 1. Take Route 1 North heading towards Topsfield. Travel four miles to Ipswich Road. Take a right onto Ipswich Road. Follow Ipswich Road for approximately two miles. Ipswich Road will turn into Topsfield Road once you are in Ipswich. There will be two turn outs on the right hand side for parking.
