Mammoth Cave offers a colossal underground maze of geological wonders and exploration

If the labyrinth of subterranean passages at Mammoth Cave National Park were unraveled to form a single tunnel stretching to the northeast, visitors from Columbus could walk the entire way to the park underground.

More than 300 miles of passageway have been discovered, making this the longest cave system in the world. The cave has been attracting visitors for at least 2,000 years. Today, about 500,000 people visit the park each year.

Mammoth Cave National Park, which covers about 52,000 acres aboveground, has always been on my travel radar, but I made my first visit in the spring.
