Originally located an hour north of San Francisco and a short drive from Muir Woods National Monument, Cowgirl Creamery offers the perfect stop on any trip through Point Reyes National Seashore.

Cowgirl Creamery began as two friends started their foray into cheese making. Since its founding in a small barn in Point Reyes over 20 years ago, the Creamery has expanded into one of the most well-known producers of organic artisan cheeses. Today, the creamery is still growing. But one thing that hasn’t changed is its commitment to producing high quality cheeses while remaining environmentally friendly.

The Creamery offers these tips when selecting cheese:

  • Determine whether or not the cheese was made with organic milk--organic cheeses are often full of nuance and flavor not found in processed cheese.
  •  Determine how long the cheese has been aged--as a cheese ages, microbes and enzymes transform texture and intensify flavor.

For the spring season the Creamery recommends their St. Pat spring cheese. The cheese is made from organic milk and comes with a distinctive, green rind that commemorates spring. After three weeks of aging, St. Pat is mellow, soft, and full of flavor. The nettle leaves impart a smoky, artichoke flavor. The cheese recently received a Gold Medal at the 2009 North American Jersey Cheese Competition.
