Overview

Gilbert Lake State Park's lake and three ponds lie in wooded, hilly terrain in the foothills of the Catskills. In addition to cabins and campsites, the park has more than 12 miles of interconnecting trails for hikers, skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoers. Playgrounds and a disc golf course, as well as swimming, boat rentals, boating (car top/hard bottom boats) and fishing are also featured.

Gilbert Lake is also home to the New York State Civilian Conservation Corps Museum.

Activities

  • Boating

    Boating is permitted within Gilbert Lake State Park, though you must have a permit to put a boat on the water. For those of you without a boat, rentals are available from the park.

  • Bicycling

    The many paths that wind over the hilly terrain of Gilbert Lake State Park make it the perfect place for an afternoon bike ride with your family!

  • Camping

    Cabins and campsites are available for public use by reservation. Facilities include a dumping station, public showers (accessible), and recreation programs in order to help visitors enjoy their stay.

  • Fishing

    Fishing is permitted within the park, but only in car top/hard bottom boats with a permit. Shoreline or dock fishing is also permitted.

  • Golfing

    Gilbert Lake State Park has a disc golf course for those of you who enjoy throwing the disc around!

  • Hiking

    With over 12 miles of interconnecting trails, Gilbert Lake State Park is a great place for hikers and birders to enjoy a sunny afternoon.

  • Historic Sites

    Gilbert Lake is home to the New York State Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, featuring memorabilia, photographs, printed materials and exhibits about the works of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the park and in other parks in New York and the United States.

  • Hunting

    Deer hunting, bow only, is permitted in the park during gun season.

  • Picnicking

    Picnic tables are aplenty in Gilbert Lake State Park, as well as pavilions to keep you out of the rain and playgrounds to run around on!

  • RVing

    RVs are welcome at Gilbert Lake State Park. Facilities include a dumping station, public showers (accessible), and recreation programs in order to help visitors enjoy their stay.

  • Water Sports

Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse: Thruway (I-90) east to exit 30, Herkimer; Rt.5S west to Rte.51 south. Left on County Rt.12, follow signs four miles to park entrance.

Albany: I-88 west to Rt.205 (exit 13); Rt.205 north to Laurens; county Rt.12 west to park entrance.

New York: Thruway (I-87) to exit 21 (Hudson-Catskill); Rt.23 west to Oneonta; Rt.205 to Laurens; County Rt.12 to park entrance.
