Overview

Dreher Island State Recreation Area is just about 30 miles from downtown Columbia on the shores of big Lake Murray. Make this your next destination! The Recreation Area is famous for hosting some of the best catches of known and striped bass. Whether you are traveling in a group, family, or are an avid fishermen, this southern destination is for you. Three islands linked to the shore by a causeway and 2 bridges make up this Recreation Area. This place offers hikers the chance to escape into the woods thanks to accessible hiking trails. There area also many places to fish from shore. The Dreher Island Recreation Areae offers guests the chance to picnic, camp or make use of the wonderful lakeside villas (pets are not allowed in the villas or the villa areas). The Park also has a tackle shop and boat ramp. Popular among boaters and fishermen, this place has hosted major national bass tournaments.

Activities

  • Boating

    Three boat ramps provides private boat access to Lake Murray.

  • Bicycling

    From picnic area #2, guests can enjoy a relaxing walk along the ¼-mile Billy Dreher Nature Trail. From picnic area #4 guests can experience a moderate 2.1 mile hike along the Little Gap Trail. In addition to these two hiking trails a .33 mile multi-use trail exits through the middle of State Park Loop. This trail is designated for bike and foot traffic only.

  • Camping

    Two lakefront camping areas have scenic views and easy access to the shoreline of Lake Murray. Ninety-seven paved sites may be used by both RVs and tents, while 15 sites are for tent campers only.

  • Fishing

    Enjoy fishing in Lake Murray for several species of bass including largemouth and stripers, catfish, bream, crappie and yellow perch.

  • Hiking

    Thirteen picnic shelters are available for family or other group gatherings. Each shelter may be reserved, If shelters are not reserved, guests may use shelters on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge.

  • RVing

    RV is permitted.

Driving

From I-26: Take exit 91 (Chapin exit- Hwy. 48) to Chapin. Turn rt on Hwy 76 for 1/8 mile, then turn left onto St. Peter's Church Rd (Hwy. 29) for 4 mi. Turn left onto Dreher Island Rd (Hwy 231) for approximately 3 mi. Then turn onto State Park Rd for 2 mi. to the park entrance.
