Overview

Talladega Drive offers a bird's-eye view of scenic mountains, rock outcroppings, and small rural settlements within the Talladega National Forest. Heading towards Cheaha State Park and Alabama's highest peak, with an elevation of 2,407 feet, visitors travel the backbone of Horseblock and Cheaha Mountains, the southernmost extension of the Appalachian Mountains. Several campground are located off the 26-mile byway, and Cheaha State Park, located at the state's highest point, treats visitors to great hiking trails, a restaurant with great views, and varies lodging facilities.

Activities

  • Auto/Motorcycle

    This scenic 26-mile byway offers beautiful views of the mountains, rock outcroppings, and rural villages in the Talladega National Forest. While the views are great all year, the spring flower and fall color seasons offer the best scenery.

  • Camping

    Campsites are available in Cheaha State Park and there are 2 designated campgrounds near Pinhoti. A more primitive campground is located off the Drive at Turnip Seed. Additionally, camping is permissible anywhere along the nearby Pinhoti National Recreation Trail.

Seasonality/Weather

Although the byway is open for travel year-round, an occasional winter storm may require the Drive to be closed for one or two days. However, if the Drive is closed, most other roads in the surrounding area are closed, as well.

Driving

From Birmingham to Talladega Scenic Drive

Take I-20 east towards Atlanta. Follow I20 east until you reach Oxford. Get onto US-78 east. Follow US-78 until you reach the Talladega Scenic Drive or AL-281 where the byway begins.

From Atlanta to Talladega Scenic Drive

Take I-20 west towards Birmingham. Turn onto AL-46 west. Follow the main road as it turns into US-78. Follow US-78 until you reach the Talladega Scenic Drive or AL-281 where the byway begins.

Flying

The closest major airports are in Atlanta and Birmingham. A variety of car rental agencies is available at both.
