Overview

The Texas State Railroad, established 1881, is truly a 'Texas Treasure!' This historic train travels through the scenic piney woods and hardwood creek bottoms of East Texas where rolling hills, nature and wildlife abound.

The Texas State Railroad offers both steam and diesel train excursions reminiscent of days gone by. Passengers may board excursion trains at either the Rusk or Palestine depots where southern hospitality is the norm. These depots were built with an eye for detail and the elegance of Victorian charm. They are surrounded by beautiful parks with lakes and streams offering visitors full-service campground facilities, picnic areas, concessions and a great deal more to enhance a four-season vacation experience. This is a perfect family outing!

  • Camping

    Come camp and ride the train at the Texas State Railroad!

    Nestled in the piney woods of East Texas the campgrounds offer a unique experience to stay onsite at a historic railroad. There is nothing like waking up to the sound of one of the steam engines coming down the track! * 71 camping sites with full hook-up * Group or tent sites each with water and electricity * Picnic tables, grills, fire rings, and restrooms and showers * Campground Office & Store where you can purchase firewood, ice, drinks, snacks, & other items and also checkout the activity equipment.

  • Fishing

    There is a 15 acre fishing lake at Rusk Depot.

  • Hiking

    There is a 1/4 mile nature trail at Rusk Depot. A corn maze is located along the rail line near the community of Maydelle. A train shuttle to the maze will depart from the Maydelle Depot from 10:00am to 4:00pm on select days in September and October.

  • Historic Sites

    Celebrate the spirit of Texas with a train ride at the Texas State Railroad. Enjoy a historic ride on several different excursions. Steam engine excursions, vintage diesel excursions, a chance to experience the 1890's Turntable in Maydelle, special events, and more!

  • Picnicking

    Picnic sites with fire rings are available to visitors.

  • RVing

    Palestine Depot has RV campsites.

  • Tennis

    Tennis courts, horseshoes, volleyball, and shuffleboard are available at Rusk Depot.

East Texas -- Piney Woods

The Texas State Railroad is approximately a TWO AND A HALF HOUR DRIVE FROM DALLAS and 3 HOURS FROM HOUSTON , conveniently located off Hwy. 287 southeast of Interstate 45, or east of Dallas on Interstate 20, continuing south of Tyler on Hwy. 69. The depots are located on the outskirts of both Rusk and Palestine on U.S. Hwy 84.
